Women's stories & our history

Since 1913 La Prensa has been the place where our community tells its own story. We The Women continues that work — lifting up the strengths, history, challenges and successes of the women who built San Antonio.

1913 — The founding era

The women who kept the presses running

From the paper's earliest years, women set type, sold subscriptions door to door and carried La Prensa into homes across the West Side. Their labor made a Spanish-language press possible in Texas.

Movimiento years

Organizers, teachers and comadres

Mothers and teachers organized around schools, wages and voting rights. La Prensa printed their meeting notices, their letters and their demands when no one else would.

Today

Women building the next San Antonio

Small-business owners, nurses, artists, first-generation graduates and neighborhood leaders. We The Women gathers them into one circle of mentors and mentees so strength keeps getting passed forward.

Have a story about a woman who shaped our community? Send it to our editors — we publish community voices, not crime coverage.
