Westside food pantry doubles its weekly reach

A Westside food pantry is doubling its weekly reach this fall with help from a growing volunteer network and new distribution partners. The expansion will allow more families to receive groceries, household basics and referrals to additional community support.

Volunteers say the need has remained steady as families continue balancing rent, utilities, transportation, child care and medical costs. For some households, a weekly pantry visit helps stretch a paycheck and reduces the pressure of choosing between essentials.

The pantry's work is rooted in dignity. Families are greeted by name, offered choices when possible and connected with people who understand that asking for help should never come with shame.

Community partners are helping coordinate delivery routes, donation drives and volunteer shifts so service can reach more neighborhoods without overwhelming the existing team. Organizers are also looking for bilingual volunteers who can help with intake and follow up calls.

The expansion is a reminder of what nonprofits do best: identify a need, gather neighbors and respond with care. On the West Side, feeding families is not charity from a distance. It is community taking care of community.
